A distinguished young professor of physics and leading expert on particle physics, string theory, and cosmology (her research of the past five years is the most cited of any physicist in the world)  here presents a readable inquiry into the idea that there may be an extra dimension, in fact another universe, just a few inches away.  She explores a raft of new concepts including parallel universes, warped geometry, and three-dimension sink-holes.  This is in part her own story of how she found herself immersed in these multidimensional topics and in part a story of particle physics and string theory, including the kinds of problems that extra dimensions might solve and the questions that are left wide open.
